The ‘eyes’ have it! Madison-Milwaukee research to headline July 11 Tech Council event in Wauwatosa

July 11 @ 11:30 am - 1:30 pm

Hear from representatives from two major Wisconsin research institutions discuss their collaboration to better understand the structure and function of the human visual system at the Thursday, July 11 luncheon meeting of the Tech Council Innovation Network in Wauwatosa.

Panelists are Dr. Joseph Carroll, an investigator for Medical College of Wisconsin, and Dr. Melissa Skala, an investigator for Morgridge Institute for Research. Together, they developed an imaging technique that offers 3D color images of melanin, which serves a protective purpose by absorbing excess light that comes into eyes and is essential to vision.

Since 2016, Carroll and Skala morphed two different technologies to publish three papers and a patent disclosure. Their research is the first to use photo-thermal optical coherence tomography applied to the eye.

The event will take place at UW-Milwaukee’s Innovation Accelerator, 1225 Discovery Parkway. Registration, networking and hors d’oeuvres start at 11:30 a.m. and the presentation at 12:30 p.m. The cost is $10 for students and returning veterans, $25 for individual members, $35 for non-members and included for Tech Council corporate members. Click here to register.

“This isn’t just research that may pay off someday. It’s ready to translate to humans now because the team has shown it can be done with safe laser levels,” said Tom Still, president of the Wisconsin Technology Council. “It demonstrates what can happen when researchers from our major institutions combine forces. People everywhere can benefit.”

The meeting is sponsored by the UW-Milwaukee and UWM Research Foundation and co-produced by the Wisconsin Healthcare Business Forum.

The Tech Council is the independent, non-profit science and technology adviser to the governor and Legislature, with events, publications and outreach that build Wisconsin’s tech-based economy. To join, go to www.wisconsintechnologycouncil.com or call 608-442-7557.
