Milwaukee Business Journal: Ascension Wisconsin, Alverno College nursing schools to merge

The 118-year-old Columbia College of Nursing in Glendale, which is affiliated with Ascension Columbia St. Mary’s, signed a letter of intent to merge with Alverno College’s JoAnn McGrath School of Nursing on Milwaukee’s south side.

Ascension Wisconsin and Alverno announced Tuesday they agreed to a strategic alliance and are engaged “in serious discussions” to combine the two private nursing schools. After the transaction is finalized, Columbia College of Nursing’s programs will be administered by Alverno’s School of Adult Learning and New Initiatives and curricular oversight will be provided by Alverno’s nursing school.

Columbia College of Nursing is at 4425 N. Port Washington Road in a building leased by Columbia St. Mary’s. The school has been affiliated with Columbia St. Mary’s predecessor hospital Columbia Hospital since 1909. Columbia College of Nursing offers both Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degrees.

An audit of Columbia College of Nursing’s financials for the fiscal ear ending June 30, 2017, showed total revenue of $4.5 million and total expenses of $4.6 million, according to a document attached to the school’s Form 990 income tax filing.
