WisBusiness: Drug overdose deaths in Wisconsin jumped by 27.5 percent in 2020

— Drug overdose deaths in Wisconsin jumped by 27.5 percent in 2020, according to the latest figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The CDC site shows 1,530 drug overdose deaths were reported for the year in Wisconsin. A year earlier, that number was 1,200, the CDC figures show.

Wisconsin’s increase matches the national trend, as the total number of drug overdose deaths in the country increased by 29.6 percent during 2020. Only two states — South Dakota and New Hampshire — saw decreases over the year.

Still, the CDC site indicates that overdose death numbers for every state in the country may be underreported due to incomplete data. That suggests the true figures may be even higher.

In Wisconsin, the number of annual drug overdose deaths has largely been increasing since at least 2015, though a slight decrease was seen in late 2018. But the overall trend has been clear, as the number of overdose deaths has risen from under 900 in 2015 to over 1,500 last year.
