WisconsinEye: Medicaid expansion and Wisconsin hospitals

On April 29, WisconsinEye interviewed Eric Borgerding, Wisconsin Hospital Association president and CEO, about Medicaid expansion. Borgerding discussed the current state of Wisconsin hospitals and how Governor Tony Evers’ budget initiatives for health care and Medicaid expansion would impact them.

Wisconsin hospitals serving the highest number of uninsured or Medicaid patients tend to have the most financial stress. In Wisconsin, Medicaid, or BadgerCare, reimbursement only covers 65 percent of health care costs which is 27 percent below the national average.

Borgerding highlighted that, in 2017, 40 hospitals were in the red financially out of about 135, making it slightly under every 1 in 3 hospitals.
