The Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin Endowment, a charity run through the Medical College of Wisconsin, will award $6.5 million to 17 projects designed to advance health equity across the state.
The projects include campaigns led by community agencies and MCW researchers that “focused on underserved, marginalized, and stigmatized populations,” AHW said in a release. Emerging and long-standing statewide health issues like domestic violence, substance abuse and mental health care access will be addressed by the programs.
AHW funding will also go to efforts to expand Wisconsin’s health care system and address labor shortages.
Since 2004, AHW has dispersed $310 million in funds to 515 projects across the state.
Encompass Health Corporation will partner with Hospital Sisters Health System to operate the Rehabilitation Hospital of Western Wisconsin, a 36-bed inpatient facility in Eau Claire.
The rehabilitation hospital will be located within HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital. It will replace HSHS Sacred Heart’s current 24-bed inpatient rehabilitation unit.
The new unit will serve patients recovering from major injuries and illnesses like strokes, brain and spinal cord damage, and amputations. Construction will begin in September 2021 with an estimated opening a year later.
